As an emerging interdisciplinary field stemming from the deep integration of artificial intelligence and basic science, scientific intelligence accelerates scientific discovery, solves complex scientific problems, drives paradigm shifts in scientific research, and promotes the sustainable development of artificial intelligence through interdisciplinary integration. Scientific intelligence has shown unique advantages and broad prospects in dealing with complex system problems, and has important value for basic research and major applications. In various basic research fields such as mathematics, physics, computational science, chemistry, and biology, as well as strategic application areas such as fusion energy, deep space exploration, and advanced manufacturing, scientific intelligence has received more and more attention. Many national big science installations and international big science programs are actively promoting the construction of digital and intelligent platforms. From the perspective of both material science and information science, scientific intelligence represents a vigorously developing frontier.
The Institute of Scientific Artificial Intelligence (ISAI) initiated its preparation in June 2024. By deeply integrating foundational disciplines and major strategic directions—such as AI, plasma physics, computational mathematics, high-performance computing, fusion energy, deep space exploration, and advanced industrial manufacturing—ISAI proactively takes the lead in disciplinary development layout in the field of Scientific Artificial Intelligence, builds a first-class research team, and conducts a series of systematic and innovative studies in relevant cutting-edge interdisciplinary areas.
