General Information

The Weihai Institute for Interdisciplinary Research, Shandong University, was established in July 2020, dedicated to promoting exploration and research into frontier science and fostering interdisciplinary integration. To address complex scientific and technological challenges, Weihai Institute for Interdisciplinary Research actively brings together expertise from multiple fields, promotes intellectual exchange and interdisciplinary cooperation, integrates the advantages of various disciplines and creates a leading platform for interdisciplinary academic development. It seizes the opportunity to explore mechanisms and approaches for interdisciplinary integration and identifies new areas of disciplinary growth, driving progress in frontier science and technology at the Weihai campus and contributing to the “Double World-Class” construction of Shandong University.

The Institute of Blue and Green Development is affiliated with the Weihai Institute for Interdisciplinary Research. Guided by the concept of "Ecological conservation" and "Beautiful China initiative", the institute is committed to advancing interdisciplinary research that addresses critical national needs such as ocean development (Blue) and low-carbon economic transition (Green). By leveraging strengths across multiple disciplines, the institute aims to foster innovation through interdisciplinary research that addresses the complex challenges at the intersection of economics, resources, environment, and climate, therefore contributing to sustainable management and green development within the framework of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The institute promotes cross-disciplinary innovation across Shandong University’s three campuses, focusing on integrating economic resources and environmental systems, advancing both research and graduate education.

It currently has doctoral and master’s programs in population, resources, and environmental economies, as well as resources and environment. It also holds a postdoctoral research center. Additionally, the institute actively collaborates with domestic and international universities and research institutions to tackle major scientific challenges and produce significant results. Our team has published research papers in prestigious journals such as journals of the Science and Nature families, sister journals of Cell, the Lancet, and has led major projects funded by the Major Program of the National Social Science Fund of China, the Key Program of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and the National Key Research and Development Program of China. Looking ahead, the Institute of Blue and Green Development aims to establish itself as an internationally recognized, distinctively featured, interdisciplinary academic hub and innovation center.
